July 2017: Atom probe study of B2 order and A2 disorder of the FeCo matrix in an Fe-Co-Mo-alloy
Studying order and disorder at the atomic scale
We studied an Fe-Co-Mo Maraging steel designed for high performance cutting applications. The microstructure contains long-range ordered nanoscale domains of an ordered B2 phase within a disordered body-centered cubic Fe-Co matrix. These domains substantially lower the impact toughness of this steel. In this work, we have applied a combination of field ion and atom probe microscopy to reveal the details of the chemical and structural order within the nanoscale ordered domains.
