March: Dr Jiabao Yi, "Tuning magnetic properties using alkaline elements"
This research work involved study of the magnetic properties of α-MnO2 with different concentrations of alkaline doping. Pure MnO2 is an antiferromagnet. The tunnels in α-MnO2 can incorporate alkaline ions, such as Li, Na, and K, which induce strong ferromagnetism-like behaviour in α-MnO2 . In addition, the variation of doping concentrations can tune the magnetic properties. First principle calculations indicate that the ferromagnetism is due to the incomplete fillings of alkaline ions and charge transfer. The work has led to the understanding of magnetic behaviours of α-MnO2. In addition, MnO2 is one of the important materials for catalyst, electrode of batteries and supercapacitors. Hence, the tuneable properties of MnO2 may be of importance for the development of these applications.
