Postgrad Student Guides
We at the Materials Science and Engineering Postgraduate Society (MSE PGSOC) are well aware of how daunting starting postgraduate studies can be for anyone – both internationals and locals alike. When you arrive in MSE there is a lot to do before you get down to real research. To help speed up this process, PGSOC and the Peer Mentoring team have combined forces to put together these three handy guides for new PGs in the school.
In our International Arrival Guide we cover everything you need to think about before you arrive in Sydney, and what to do in your first few days to get yourself set up in the office. We have included a useful checklist to ensure you don’t miss anything when you get to Australia!
The Postgraduate Welcome Guide highlights the faces around MSE that you should learn to recognise, including PGSOC executives, peer mentors, academic/technical staff and administrative staff. We also cover how to gain access to labs and start your experiments, as well as giving a taste of the social side of PGSOC and MSE. The guide finishes with health and wellbeing tips, plus a really helpful list of links to further information that you may need during your studies here.
Our final handy document was created to highlight how important work/life balance is during your postgraduate years. The Mini-Guide to Sydney gives an overview of how to get around the city, and what’s happening throughout the year within the local area and across all of Sydney. Be sure to check out some of our favourite spots and enjoy the many events and festivals that grace the Harbour City throughout the year!
