Liberty OneSteel Summer Vacation Presentation
Recently, we revived our ongoing partnership with Liberty OneSteel in Rooty Hill. We are excited that Liberty OneSteel will continue their summer vacation internship program, hosting two UNSW Materials undergrad students every Summer. Furthermore, we will organise plant tours for some of our MATS1192 and MATS3003 students and guest lectures on Aussie steelmaking by Paul O’Kane (Liberty OneSteel). Sophie Primig joined the final presentations of the current summer vacation students in Rooty Hill:
3rd year student Michael Thien spent his second summer at Liberty OneSteel in the melt shop. He came up with strategies for yield improvement of the tundish. Inevitably, when changing from one steel grade to the next, some so-called mixer grade billets are cast, which have to be sent to the scrap yard. Michael came up with a strategy to reduce the number of such mixer grade billets.
2nd year student Joel Luke Abraham is the first international student in this program, and he was placed in the rolling mill. Interestingly, his direct supervisor was our recent alumni Gus Irani who is also a former Liberty OneSteel summer vacation scholar. Joel gave a great presentation using quite advanced steel processing vocabulary such as Dbar cobbles, billet metre weights and secondary scale analyses.
Thanks to the Liberty OneSteel team (especially Zheshi Jin and Paul O’Kane) for doing such a great job hosting and mentoring our undergrad students!
