Welcome from the HoS

Welcome to the School’s first newsletter for 2018. Within you can read profiles of two new academic staff members, Professor Tom Wu and Dr Kris Killian. Both Tom and Kris were brought to UNSW through programs that sit within UNSW 2025 Strategy. These schemes are allowing us to identify and hire outstanding academics from around the world and to bring them to work with us at UNSW.










New Staff Profile: Scientia Fellow, Associate Professor Kristopher Kilian

Associate Professor Kristopher Kilian recently commenced a joint appointment across the Schools of Materials Science and Engineering and Chemistry. Kris’s research group explores how natural and synthetic materials influence the signalling that controls cell fate and function.

New Staff Profile: Professor Tom Wu

Professor Tom Wu joined the School in November 2017. He received his B.S. degree from Zhejiang University in 1995 and Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2002. He worked in Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.

Research News: Revolutionary new filter can improve drinking water quality

A world-first graphene-based filter that can remove more than 99% of the natural organic matter in treated drinking water is being scaled up for possible use in conventional plants.
