Use of Computer Lab

Introduction

Windows XP Professional has recently been installed on the PC's in the computing laboratory.

Rules

  • Use CTRL-ALT-DEL to log in and CTRL-ALT-DEL to log out. NEVER switch the power off or reset the computer.
  • LOG OUT when you are finished with a machine. (CTRL-ALT-DEL, then select log out )
  • Do NOT install any software on the WorkStations or in your home directory. (This includes freeware, shareware, drivers etc)
  • Keep diskusage under 50Mb. Pay attention to emailed warnings about your diskusage.
User Profiles

User information and settings such as Desktop Settings, configurations etc are stored in User Profiles. The NT network is set up with Roaming Profiles. This basically allows you to work from any machine in the Computing Laboratory with the same settings. When you first log in, the computer determines whether the locally stored copy or the server stored copy of your profile is most recent. If the server version of your profile is the most recent, the computer downloads this version to the local workstation. When you log out, the computer uploads the profile to the server.

Saving Files

  • Each user is assigned a home directory on the network file server (in Jane's Office).
  • By default this is automatically connected when you log in on one of the workstations in the computing laboratory.
  • This network drive appears as Z: drive. Everyone has his own Z: drive mapped.
  • This directory is also known by the UNC name, for user fred this directory is \\hydrogen\users\fred, for user mary the directory would be \\hydrogen\users\mary.
  • If you wish to keep files then store them in your home directory on the server, as these directories will not be accessible by others or deleted regularly.
  • Each workstation also has a users directory with user subdirectories beneath it, if you need temporary space then you can save files here, ie, user fred can save files temporarily to c:\users\fred, however these directories are cleaned up and removed once a week (Early Monday morning).
Notes

  • Whilst no quotas exist on the file server at the moment, a reasonable use of this space is expected from users, and any abuse of this mayresult in suspension of accounts.
  • The home directories can also be accessed using the UNC filename e.g (for user fred): \\hydrogen\users\fred
  • If you need to keep the document don't store it on the local workstation drives.
  • Currently \\hydrogen\users is backed up on a weekly basis, so if the files are important back them up you!
