While a large number of our graduates are still employed in traditional areas such as quality control and management, some graduates are also filling less conventional jobs. Below we hear from recent students of our graduates, Saul Griffith, Jonathan Likely, Svetlana Gilyou, Lynda Cameron and Anthony Orchard.

Saul Griffith

Saul Griffith
Materials Graduate Saul Griffith won the US$30,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize for innovation 2004.
Read about Saul's experience and how his background in Materials Engineering is helping him to innovate .

Jonathan Likely

Jonathan Likely
Jon undertook his degree in Materials Engineering under the Co-Op Program, meaning he received a scholarship each year valued at around $10,000 and undertook 64 weeks of industrial training along with his degree over five years. Over the course of this time he worked for CSR Building Materials, BHP Wollongong and BHP Newcastle. After graduating, Jon worked as part-time public relations officer with the School and was instrumental in organising the reunion dinner.

During his final year, Jon was offered a job with Accenture (formerly Anderson Consulting), in information technology. He started in this job described as a "New Technology Analyst". While his job is not materials related, Jon believes he learned important skills in the course, such as management, design, teamwork and problem solving, which will benefit him greatly in his new career path. We wish him the best of luck.

Svetlana Gilyou

Svetlana Gilyou
Sveltlana graduated from her degree in Metallurgical Engineering (Physical Metallurgy) and is now working as a metallurgical engineer for Engineering Test and Research Services (ETRS). She started the job in 1997 and worked part-time whilst completing her final year subjects over two years. She now works in fractography using techniques such as atomic spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. She analyses the microstructures of metals in industrial machinery, searching for initiation points, metal fatigue and other causes of breakdown. The outcome of industrial litigation often depends upon her findings.

Svetlana maintains her job "was pretty much a direct follow on from skills and knowledge obtained while studying at UNSW, especially the third and fourth year lecturers. They were totally in line with what is going on in industry".
