How Do I Apply

Australian Local Students

A local student is an Australian Citizen or a permanent resident of Australia.

A. Undergraduate Programs

All local students apply for undergraduate entry through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC). The contact details for UAC are:

The Universities Admission Centre (NSW & ACT)
Locked Bag 500
Lidcombe NSW 1825
Australia
Tel +61 2 9330 7200
http://www.uac.edu.au

Admission to a course is subject to meeting matriculation requirements and selection is made on the basis of the scaled mark in the Higher School Certificate.

In order to meet entry requirements into the first year subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering), the student requires mathematics and a science (physics or chemistry) with passes in the appropriate percentile range.

Students who do not have the subject prerequisite for mathematics, chemistry or physics may complete a relevant bridging courses from mid-January to mid-February. An alternative option is to study introductory subjects in Session 1. This option may extend the length of the course.

B. Postgraduate Programs

All local students applying for entry to postgraduate programs should contact the Student Recruitment Office, for program information and application forms:

The Student Recruitment Office
University of New South Wales
Sydney NSW 2052
Australia
Tel +61 2 9385 1844/1866
Email studentrecruitment@unsw.edu.au

Further information can be found from the university website.

International Students

The information in this section does not apply to persons who are Australian citizens or who are Australian Permanent Residents regardless of their country of residence. You should also visit the UNSW International Office site for more information.

A. Undergraduate Entry Requirements

The information in this section does not apply to persons who are Australian citizens or who are Australian Permanent Residents regardless of their country of residence.

All students must hold qualifications that are acceptable to the University for admission. In Australia, these are normally assessed at the end of Year 12 in the secondary education system. (Click here for Qualification Required for Overseas Students). Students who do not hold acceptable qualifications may qualify for admission to UNSW by completing the UNSW Foundation Studies Certificate.

Programs offered by the Faculties of Built Environment, Commerce and Economics, Engineering, Medicine, Science and assume a satisfactory level of Mathematics at Year 12 level or Advanced Level. To enrol in some courses students must have a background in English, Mathematics or Science. Generally speaking students must have a level of knowledge which would enable them to participate successfully at the University in those courses. Medicine applicants are also strongly advised to have studied Chemistry at Year 12 level or Advanced Level.

Information about the assumed knowledge for each program is available from the International Office or from one of the University's Representative Offices overseas.

B. Postgraduate Entry Requirements

The information in this section does not apply to persons who are Australian citizens or who are Australian Permanent Residents regardless of their country of residence.

Applicants for Postgraduate degrees shall have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor or a qualification considered equivalent at a level acceptable to the Higher Degree Committee of the Faculty for which an application is being made. Specific entry requirements for UNSW Postgraduate degree programs are available from the International Office or by contacting the Postgraduate Co-ordinator in the Faculty, School or Department in which the postgraduate degree is offered.

C. Language Requirements

All programs at UNSW are taught in English. When possible applicants whose first language is not English should include with their application a certified statement of results in the Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or another equivalent recognised test. A TOEFL result of 550 or higher (TWE minimum 5), or an IELTS result of 6.0 or higher (with 6 in all four skills) or the Institute of Languages UNSW English Entry Course (UEEC) result of C or higher, is required for unconditional entry to most programs. TOEFL 600 or IELTS 6.5 or UEEC C+ are required for Arts, Social Science, Commerce, Law, Education, Social Work, Librarianship, Management and College of Fine Arts. TOEFL 600 or IELTS 7.0 or UEEC B+ is required for Medicine.

D. English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)

The UNSW Institute of Languages is a language education centre within the University of New South Wales. Established in 1966, it is the oldest and now the largest university language centre in Australia. It offers English language assistance to international students who seek to enter degree programs at UNSW.

E. Entry of a spouse and dependents

Students applying for admission of a spouse to Australia may be required to sign an application of financial guarantee on behalf of dependants. Whilst a dependant spouse may be permitted to work, obtaining employment is not easy. It would be inadvisable to plan your income on the basis of a spouse obtaining work, only to find he/she is unable to do so. A student will probably need a minimum of $A4,500 a year for a spouse and $A3,000 a year for each child.

Regulations concerning the work rights of a spouse and the possible requirement to pay school fees for children are established by the Australian Government. International students should check with their nearest IDP Education Australia Office or Australian Government Mission on the current regulations regarding the work rights of a spouse and whether there is any need to pay school fees for their children. International students are permitted to work part-time on a casual basis, up to 20 hours per week during session and full-time during vacations. However, many students have great difficulty obtaining part-time work. It should be remembered that students must maintain a full academic load to maintain their full-time student visa status. Students who work more than 20 hours a week during session may be deported by the Immigration authorities.

G. Scholarships

A number of Australian Development Cooperation Scholarships (ADCOS), funded by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAid), are awarded to undergraduate international students. Only students from certain countries are eligible to apply and conditions governing the award of ADCOS are developed in consultation with the government of the home country. Conditions and level of assistance vary according to the country. In general, undergraduate scholarships are available to most countries in South East Asia and the Pacific with the exceptions of Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

Applications and further information may be obtained from IDP Education Australia Offices in Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Seoul, Suva and Taipei or, in countries where there is no IDP office from the Australian Diplomatic Mission. Scholarship applications may close as early as February or March for study in the following year.

UNSW also provides partial sports scholarships under the Ben Lexcen Sports Scholarship Scheme. Details are available from the Scholarships Office, UNSW.

It is important that international students apply as early as possible directly to the University to gain admission to their chosen program (or through UAC see "Admission Process") i.e. do not wait to hear the result of your scholarship application before applying for entry to University. If you already have an offer from the University, it will assist you to win a scholarship.

For more information about Scholarships please write to the University's Scholarships Unit, Sydney, 2052 Australia or email scholarships@unsw.edu.au
