Network of Women in Materials Engineering

An initiative to increase the proportion of women at all levels in materials science and engineering.
(A UNSW Equity Initiatives Grant Project addressing the issues of gender inequity at all levels within the University)

The Network of Women (NOW) is supported by the UNSW Equity Initiatives Grants fund which has been established to support projects and strategies to enhance staff and student equity and diversity at UNSW. The focus for the Grants in 2003 & 2004 is the development of initiatives to bring about the necessary structural and cultural changes to address the under-representation of women in academic positions in Schools/Centres and Faculties. These Initiatives include a range of areas like recruitment, participation, promotion, career development, research performance and training and would target specific groups of academic women within a School, Faculty or Centre, eg, women with disabilities, Indigenous academic women as well as women working in non-traditional fields.

All women with an interest in any area of Materials Science and Engineering are encouraged to join our network. All are welcome, whether you are in industry, academia, research, study or just have an interest in the field.

The Network of Women (NOW) was conceived as a forum for women in Material Sciences. The mainstay of this forum is to provide a platform where women in Material Sciences can voice their concerns regarding the issues that they face, working, as they do in an area that remains more or less male-dominated to this day.

CoalinQ Award for Outstanding Presentation

International recognition continues to be won by the women of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, UNSW. Mrs Mihaela Grigore recently won the CoalinQ Award at the 2005 International Conference on Coal Science and Technology in Okinawa, Japan.

Mihaela is presently completing her Ph.D studies at the School of Materials under the supervision of Professor Veena Sahajwalla. Mihaela received the award for Outstanding presentation at the 2005 ICCS&T. This is a great achievement recognising her outstanding research and presentation ability. Congratulations to Mihaela!
