Diversity and Inclusion

The School of Materials Science and Engineering aims to provide a safe, supportive and welcoming environment for all students regardless of their race, sex, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation or gender identification. As such, the School strongly supports UNSW's Equity and Diversity Policy in regard to these matters.

The School has established an Equity and Opportunity Committee to oversee these issues and to ensure that we provide a comfortable and safe educational environment for all.

We believe that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Questioning students ought to be able to enjoy their time with us without experiencing any sense of alienation or ill-treatment at the hands of either staff or fellow students in the University.

The ALLY@UNSW network of trained staff and students aims to ensure that UNSW is a safe, welcoming place for all students and staff who identify as LGBTIQ. If you would like to contact any of the ALLIES, they will be happy to hear from you and provide confidential referral advice.

UNSW Science also offers Support EDI Funds for staff and students to assist applicants in removing barriers to further their studies and/ or career. These funds help to stimulate innovation, productivity and progress regardless of a person’s background.

Support EDI Funds include:

  • Enable Fund: assists with career enhancement for staff with primary carer responsibilities
  • Science PhD Maternity Scholarship: supports women PhD research students who suspend their enrolment to have a child
  • Science Student EDI Awards: recognises outstanding contributions to EDI initiatives

Science & Engineering Indigenous Pre-Program

UNSW runs the Science and Engineering Indigenous Pre-Program in collaboration with Nura Gili. This pre-program offers an opportunity for Indigenous students looking to explore and apply for entry into an undergraduate degree.
