Multifunctional applications of biochar beyond carbon storage

Biochar is an emerging soil amendment that can be produced from various carbon-based biowaste sources including woody biomass, crop residues, animal litter, composts, and biosolids by using thermochemical processes such as pyrolysis. Originally proposed as a soil amendment to store carbon in the soil, thereby promoting carbon sequestration, biochar provides multifunctional value beyond carbon storage.
